italiangerry, thanks for the favorite.
Yummm! Is this simple to make? And is it just ordinary plum sauce drizzled on top?
the sauce is just plum sauce and a dash of vegetable oil.
the hard part is finely shredding all the vegetables. Traditionally it is daikon radish, carrot and the various pickles.
I like Kaffir Lime Leaves and fresh coriander / cilantro in it, and definitely crushed peanuts and toasted sesame.
Adding juliennes of crunchy fruits, and wedges of citrus makes it all "juicier".
The vegies and the fact that they need to be finely shredded reminds me a lot of popiah.
come to think of it… u’re right!
except that this has to be shredded even finer than popiah :)
And come to think of it…both popiah and yee sang are Teochew (Hokkien too I think)!
Yee Sang is Cantonese I think…
I’m pretty sure popiah is Teochew / Hokkien.
Really? I’ve always known it as a Teochew dish…ah well. Looks good nonetheless! :P
Yee Sang is Cantonese for "raw fish"…. well, technically it is "sang yee" :)
?? in Hokkien would sound like "hur ch’ng" or something…
I was just reading up online and most sources said its origins are Teochew for some reason…I think there’s probably just many regional variations. Ahh well, it’s Chinese haha!
Hi Alpha. I was surprised when we were asked a question about Yee Sang on our website. I noticed your series of Yee Sang photos some time ago, and became interested in the tradition. So this was a perfect opportunity to feature your photo and your recipe! Thanks so much for sharing this!
