Any number of churches do not count prosperity in such a way. For years, ours met in a rented warehouse. Now we meet in an old renovated school.

What do you mean?

Churches are more than just a building. Tithing is giving 10 percent of what God has given YOU to help
1) Grow a community in Christ
2) Fund missionaries
3) Provide for the poor, the orphans and the widows of the community
4) Help grow additional churches in areas that are needing churches.

A church being wealthy or financially stable is NOT a bad thing. If those funds are miss-used, then yeah - you have an issue.

I will add that churches grow. Ours started in a middle school. Some even start in houses.

They’re a business who has conned the government into letting them off tax-free.

Not sure I understand. Tithes are more like donations to the Lord’s work. You really don’t HAVE to give them. In fact, unless you really want to, God says he doesn’t want your money. (Though generosity is a righteous quality from God, and that’s what makes it seem like a requirement). Besides, if you really believe enough to tithe, you’ll know that God will make sure you’re supplied with all you need. A small monetary sacrifice will land you greater rewards through your entire future.

Plus, so much of the tithes go to people in need. The church is really more of a way point for the sending of that money. So I personally don’t see any reason not to support giving of the tithe. It’s voluntary, it’s kind, and you don’t lose anything in the long run.
